New York City is arguably the most popular tourist destination in the world. Some 65 million tourists visited New York City in 2019. Here are the most popular tourist attractions in New York City.


The tourist attractions for New York City are listed below according to how many people visit each site annually. The totals for all the tourist attractions in New York are much higher than 65 million but most tourists visit many sites during each trip to the city.

The author has lived in the New York Metropolitan area most of his life and  has been to all the tourist attractions listed below and plenty more that do not attract such huge crowds. It is hard to beat the vibrancy of all the tourist attractions located in New York.


Most Popular Tourist Attractions in New York City


1. Central Park - 37.5 million



Central Park is 843 acres large and some 37.5 million people visit the park annually. Central Park was established in 1857 and it was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Do coyotes live in Central Park today? They have been spotted in the park at times for sure but it's unlikely they could dodge some 37.5 million people on a permanent basis.

2. Rockefeller Center - 30 million


Some 750,000 people a day visit Rockefeller Center during the holiday season alone mainly to see the Christmas Tree and other lights plus the skating rink. The Top of the Rock observatory offers great views of Manhattan.

3. Times Square - 26 million


Over 1 million people visit Times Square every year on New Year's Eve alone to ring in the New Year. Times Square is the heart of the Big Apple.

4. Grand Central Station - 22 million


Grand Central Station is an architectural wonder. If you have never been it's worth the trip just to see the ceiling.

5. Staten Island Ferry - 22 million


Some 22 million people a year ride the Staten Island Ferry. How many are actual tourists is hard to say but the ferry offers awesome views of the Manhattan Skyline and it's free to ride. Let the River Run.

6. Coney Island - 14 million


Roughly 14 million people a year visit Coney Island to ride the famed roller coaster, go to the beach and eat at Nathan's Famous hot dog stand. If you want to win the famous hot dog contest all you have to do is eat 75 hot dogs including the buns in 10 minutes.

7. Broadway - 11.5 million


Broadway has a unique energy all its own. If you want to see a show and are not rich you should never have to pay full price, just google half price Broadway.

8. Prospect Park - 9 million


Opened in 1867, Prospect Park in Brooklyn is 526 acres large and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted after he finished Central Park. When Prospect Park opened Brooklyn was an independent city, and did not become a borough of New York City until 1898.

9. MET - 7 million


The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses one of the greatest collections of artwork in the world. How much are all the paintings and artwork in the MET worth? Probably over $500 billion.

10. 9/11 Memorial - 7 million


The 9/11 Memorial has rapidly become a very popular tourist attraction in New York with over 7 million annual visitors including roughly 3 million who visit the 9/11 Museum a year. Never Ever Forget

13. Museum of Natural History - 5 million



14. Statue of Liberty - 4.5 million


15. High Line - 4 million



Built on what used to be train lines that had been raised above Manhattan the High Line is a lovely place for a walk in the city.

16. Wall Street - 4 million


The Wall Street district draws some 4 million tourists annually. Many come to visit the Charging Bull statue located near the New York Stock Exchange and the bull is one of the most photographed statues in the world. The newer Fearless Girl statue has also become a tourist attraction as she faces the bull.

19. Madison Square Garden - 3 million



The New York Knicks and New York Rangers each draw about 800,000 fans a year plus another 1.2 million people visit the garden every year for other events like concerts and trade shows.

This number is likely to rise after new owner Steve Cohen starts spending some of his billions to upgrade the team. 


22. Bronx Zoo - 2.2 million
